The Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme is one of the most complex integrated water and hydro-electric power schemes in the world. It started construction on the 17th October 1949, and wasn’t completed till 1974. When finished, the Scheme consisted of seven power stations, 16 major dams, 145 kilometres of inter-connected tunnels and 80 kilometres of aqueducts.
The Scheme took 25 years to build, and the total cost was $820 million. More than 100,000 people from over 30 countries came to work in the mountains, and 121 people lost their lives in industrial accidents.
